We have a great group of students training at Birdman BJJ. An eclectic variety of true Brooklyn personalities…from all walks of life. When you’re in the Brooklyn area please stop by and train with the best, in a very safe and friendly environment. With the student body growing we will be adding to the program and making revisions to make it the best academy NYC has to offer.

Four on the Floor…

Here’s a great little teaser video from the Jamie Cruz Seminar. We will have a lot more clips to follow, plus a full length version of the entire session. As always big thanks to Stafford Sports Media for the fine work. Yesterday’s open mat was a lot of fun with a ton of great training. The new class schedule is working out great with a lot of positive feedback.

Monday and Wednesday 7:15 pm – 8:15 pm and 8:30 pm – 9:30 pm.

Tuesday and Thursday 7:00 am – 8:00 am

Friday 7:15 pm – 8:15 pm, open mat 8:15 – 9:00 pm.

Birdman gear update!!!

Birdman MC Gi’s are set to hit the streets in about five weeks.  These will be a limited run of just 50 uniforms…so once they are gone they will be gone forever.  All embroidered, original artwork by the world famous artist Mr Ewok One.  The price is $160 plus shipping…or simply stop by the academy.  All orders shipped outside the US will also receive a free t-shirt.

The academy is really coming along.  We had a bunch of new students start last week…the mats are starting to fill up.  If you haven’t been to the school yet, please feel free to stop by for a free class. 

Drills and Don’ts

Big thanks to Jamie Cruz for stopping by a few Sunday’s ago.  A great time was had by all.  Everyone is still going nuts over all the fantastical jiu jitsu specific drills.  Jamie set us all straight with the do’s and don’ts of correct drilling.  Professor Cruz has been known to wake up screaming from nightmares of students drilling incorrectly.  I have heard from everyone there that the traing was very eye opening on how to really move your hips.  From new students to veterans of the game the word is clear on that.  Stop by the academy any Friday night in the month of March to see these drills in action.  We hit the mats at 7:15 pm, followed by an open mat 8:15 – 9:00 pm. 
The weather here is a little nuts right now…snowing like crazy to be exact.  Technique of the Week will be back next week, had a little bump in production…didn’t shoot footage last week…sorry Eric. In case you don’t know, Eric is our film maker…Stafford Sports Media.  Check out his stuff on line, he does some great work.

Birdman BJJ Technique of the Week #11

Here’s a nice technique we’ve been working on at the academy for the past few weeks. It’s a snap down arm drag from the open guard. You can use this series to really defend your guard…keeping your opponent from turning the corner. This past weekend was a huge success!!! The Jamie Cruz Seminar was awesome and a real eye opener for both new and experienced students that were on the mats. One of my guys told me the points Jamie worked on were “game changers.” Thank you all for coming out and thank you Professor Cruz for taking all of us through the paces. After the seminar, we jumped over to Bonnie’s on 5th Ave…Bird Food review to follow, should have it up in the next few days. This is the first week for the new schedule and everyone seems to be loving it…Monday and Wednesday 7:15 pm – 8:15 pm and 8:30 pm – 9:30 pm, Tuesday and Thursday 7:00 am – 8:00 am, Friday 7:15 pm – 8:15 pm followed by a 45 minute open mat. That’s now seven classes per week to choose from. The Friday evening class will be working drills on a round timer for a solid hour, then open training.  This is a must training session for those of you looking to compete.

Birdman BJJ Technique of the Week #10

Here we have another clever guard pass, very useful for Gi or No Gi. A good example of how “stacking” can apply such a great amount of pressure. Makes your opponent want the pass to happen more than you do. Give it a try…let me know how it is working for you. Don’t forget…this Sunday 2/24 at 12 noon we have the Jamie Cruz Seminar. Grab your Gi and get there early, space is getting limited…$50 at the door for two hours of world class instruction. We will try to have our next installment of “Bird Food” up in the next few days…this time on the menu…Hot Wings and Burgers. I am getting hungry just thinking about it.

Bird Food…

We have a new discussion topic…apres jiu jitsu cuisine, or as I like to call it…feeding time at the zoo.  The fare of choice at Birdman BJJ is fried chicken, hot wings and pizza.  The crew and I will be stopping by all the local haunts and giving you the chow hound low down.  Just a good group of neighborhood grapplers taste testing the best that Brooklyn has to offer.  I made a solo flight with the Mrs. last night to Blue Ribbon on 5th Ave.  I ordered my ubiquitous fried chicken dinner,  complete with mashed potatoes and steamed green beans.  Simply the best fried chicken in all five boro’s.  Killer mashed potatoes and i sub green beans for the usual collards.  All the crackle and crisp good down home chicken should have, without sacrificing a bit of its juiciness.  I give it 5 out of 5 stars…this is the black belt of meals.  Pair the dinner with a sweet tea or a tall bottle of Brooklyn Local 1.  Next time me and the gang will pick a new place to invade and conquer…one finger licking bite at a time.
